AHH YES, COMFORT FOOD From Sloane Taylor  This recipe makes one delicious sandwich that works great for lunch or dinner. Add a bowl of soup or crispy salad and a nice cold beer for a complete meal.   Revved Up Grilled Ham & Cheese Sandwich 2 slices Italian bread  4 slices ham, cut thin  slices mozzarella cheese, cut thin  2 slices tomato, cut thin  Garlic powder NOT garlic salt ⅛ tsp.  ground thyme 2 tbsp.  butter   Preheat a heavy 8 - 10 inch skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.  Spread the butter on the inside of each slice of bread. Sprinkle on a little garlic powder. Grill bread buttered side down until lightly browned. Remove bread to cutting board.  Reduce heat to medium.  Lay one slice of cheese on toasted side of bread, then sprinkle on thyme. Add ham and tomato. Top with another slice of cheese. Make Sunday morning special with this delicious and easy make-ahead meal. Serve with mini croissants or French bread, butter and jelly. Hash browns and fruit salad are nice accompaniments. Mimosas are a lovely drink to top off your breakfast/brunch. Breakfast SoufflĂ©  1 pound ham, bacon, or breakfast sausage  9 eggs, lightly beaten  3 cups milk  1 tsp. dry mustard  Diced green, red, and/or yellow pepper to taste  4 – 1 inch slices Vienna or French bread,  cubed ½ pound sharp cheddar cheese,  ½ pound Swiss or Gruyere cheese, or a combination of the two grated  Diced onion to taste  Freshly ground black pepper to taste   Preheat oven to 350°F. Dice the ham or bacon. If you use ham, set aside in the bowl you choose for the eggs. Fry bacon to the crispness you prefer. If you use breakfast sausage, fry the meat until no longer pink. A small bowl of hot soup is an excellent starter to any meal. You can also enjoy soup for lunch or dinner by adding a salad and fresh bread. This hearty recipe works great for all situations. Add a glass of crisp white wine and enjoy!   Minestrone (Vegetable) Soup ½ cup dry white beans, navy or Great Northern 4 tbsp. butter 1 cup frozen peas 1 cup zucchini, unpeeled, scrubbed and diced 1 cup carrots, diced 1 cup red potatoes, diced ⅓ cup celery, diced 5 strips bacon, diced ¼ cup onion, chopped ½ cup leeks (or substitute onions), chopped fine 2 cups drained diced tomatoes 2 quarts chicken stock, homemade or canned 1 bay leaf 1 tbsp. parsley Freshly ground black pepper to taste ½ cup rice Bring 1 quart of water to a boil in a heavy 3-to 4-quart saucepan. Add the beans and boil for 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let the beans soak for 1 hour. A Taste of Italy  This dish may seem like a lot of work, but it really isn’t. Besides, you will love the beautiful blend of flavors. This recipe serves 2, maybe 3, people. Double it and freeze for a later meal. Serve with a Caesar salad and a crisp white wine.   Chicken Tetrazzini   Chicken Casserole with Noodles and Mushrooms Chicken 2 chicken breasts, boneless, skinless  1 medium onion, peeled and halved  1 whole clove  1 stalks celery, including leaves  1 bay leaf  1 medium-sized carrot  5 cups chicken stock   Combine chicken and all remaining ingredients in a 3-quart saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce temperature to low and simmer, partially covered for 15 to 25 minutes, or until the chicken is tender but not falling apart.  Transfer the chicken to a cutting board. Sunday suppers are always a challenge with our busy schedules. We want a meal that’s tasty, easy, and doesn’t take an hour to prepare. This menu is perfect for that criteria. The pasta salad reached perfection through the taste buds of my daughter, grand-girls, and four nieces who all know what they like. Make the salad the day before so the flavors blend.   Grilled Sirloin Steak & Cheese Sandwiches 4 fresh Kaiser rolls, cut in half 1½ pounds sirloin steak, about 1 inch thick 1 roma tomato 4 slices mozzarella, provolone, or horseradish cheese, not too thin Olive oil Garlic powder, NOT garlic salt Preheat a heavy 8-10 inch skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Brush a light coating of olive oil on the inside of each half of the rolls. Sprinkle on a little garlic powder. Grill rolls oil side down until lightly browned. Remove to a cutting board.
