Welcome Rebel Ink

We’d like to thank our gracious host for having us over today. We’re happy to share with you a little bit about our blossoming company and you’ll get to know more about the team that makes the machine that is Rebel Ink Press run smoothly.

Rebel was born in August 2010, the brain child of five friends that envisioned a portal into the publishing world where writers were treated like people rather than a number.  A place where they could grow and learn and hone their skills, flourish, all while having an open line of communication with said publisher without fear of never getting an answer or being told not to worry. A couple of us were previously published and understood that worrying is a natural part of the publishing cycle on the part of the writer and isn’t to be taken lightly. After all, these works are writer's children, being sent into an often times critical world, and worrying is just a natural part of that.

What did we know? Well, the short answer is we learned to fly so to speak pretty darn quick. Isn’t that what Rebels do? Strike out without fear? We used the old school trick of finding things out by trial and error. By our own experiences—tapping into what we knew would work and discarding what we’d learned was useless. The result is what you find today…Rebel Ink Press, where the writers come first and they are a face with a name and part of our family, not just another manuscript. Our philosophy sums it up best:

As a company, Rebel strives to provide readers with stories they want and while offering the services authors deserve. We're committed to good citizenship, fair business practices, and developing up and coming authors through editorial support, marketing and promotion--all of which help authors create their best works possible.

Our philosophy must be working because here we are a year later, Rebel strong! We now house over sixty writers and our inbox is a busy place. We currently have eighty plus titles available at ARe, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Coffee Time Romance and Bookstrand, and we’re looking to expand our vendor list in 2012. Our release calendar is full and our first quarter of 2012 is busting at the seams. In fact we’re looking to double our available titles this year. Our writers are gleaning rave reviews and several are bestsellers at ARe, to date they’ve earned twenty-one of those coveted silver stars.

At Rebel our promise to ourselves was to provide the Cadillac of customer service to our writers. Yes, our writers. They enjoy benefits under our roof not often offered through small presses, such as the services of a professional cover artist, marketing opportunities arranged through our public relations department, professional editing services by a half-dozen plus hand-selected editors, graphic arts help, and we have an in-house review coordinator. Our ARCs are sent out in advance of release to reputable and safe reviewers so we have feedback for our writers to grow on. As a result, we’re growing, too. By leaps and bounds.

Again we’d like to say thanks for hosting us today. If you have questions, please leave them in the comments section or email us at . We’d be happy to answer them.

Night with a Dom by Casea Major

Thanks for having me on your blog today.
I came up with the idea for this 1Night Stand story while watching football one Sunday afternoon in late fall. I wondered what kind of catalyst would propel someone into experimenting with their darker sexual desires. What would cause someone to take a small step out of their comfort zone to seek fulfillment for a craving they'd never satisfied. That is how Night with a Dom was born.
And as for the football tie-in -- If you buy the story and can find the hidden football reference email me and maybe you'll get a prize.

Melody Manning’s workaholic ambition, coupled with a slave-driving former boss, has made her the youngest market analyst in her firm. It’s also killed her personal life, including losing her fiancé. When she receives a message from him on New Year’s Eve announcing his engagement to another woman, Mel loses it. Her new, more compassionate boss has the perfect solution for her—get laid. Good and laid.
At his suggestion, she signs up with the 1Night Stand service, listing her deepest sexual desires on the application.  A speedy response from Madame Eve has Melody on her way to Sonoma Valley wine country and a one-night stand with a mysterious Dom.
The sexy, masked Master promises to get to the bottom of her guilt and provide ultimate satisfaction under the safety of his stern hand. After an emotional night of submission and uninhibited passion, will her lover’s unmasking lead to the end of their encounter or give Mel another chance at love?

The following excerpt has been bleeped out to make it a PG-13 excerpt. Please keep in mind that the book does contain adult themes and language, and is not suitable for minors. Thank you.
Mel sucked in a breath, and opened the door. The darkened room flickered with the light of at least a dozen candles. She squinted as she walked in. The smell of incense and roses wafted in the air. Her sight adjusted, and the darker shadows of the space became visible. She scanned the scene.
In the middle of the room sat an oversized bed covered in black velvet and satin. Her arms and legs quivered. A roughly made wooden table stood with two straight-backed chairs in the corner, and a tray of appetizing food awaited.
She stood frozen, anticipating his appearance. Her heart thumped in her chest. Was he hiding? She began to turn—
“Do not turn around, Miss Manning.” His voice whispered against her ear.
She jumped at the husky sound, but didn’t try to move away.
He ran his hands across her shoulders and trailed his fingers down her bare arms. “Are you frightened, kitten?”
Her skin tingled at his simple, but intimate touch. The heat from his massive body radiated against her back though he never made contact with it. Although she couldn’t see him, his presence filled the room, and the walls seemed to shrink at his closeness. “I’m a little scared. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I guess you do—”
His finger glided up her shoulder to press against her lips and his whispered rebuke filled her ear. “Silence.”
Her eyes fluttered closed. Pleasure and fear mingled in her mind and over her skin. She wanted so bad to turn her head and look at him, but somehow she knew she shouldn't.
The spicy masculine scent of him filled the air, and his moist, heavy breath sent waves of heat  down her neck. “During this portion of the evening you will only speak when asked a direct question, and you will address me as ‘Sir’. Understand?”
Concentrating on his words, she had to strain to hear him over her pounding heart but nodded. In the dim light of the candles, her chest rose and fell rapidly. Excitement and fear zinged to her extremities and every place in between.
“There’s nothing to be frightened of.”
He trailed his tongue from her earlobe down to her nape. She gasped and tensed her shoulders as he nipped and sucked the sensitive skin. Goosebumps covered her from head to toe. Her nipples hardened and throbbed. The mystery of him enticed her as much as his touch and scent.
He swept his hand slowly over her stomach. She melted back against him, the heat of his body wrapping around hers, instant, carnal and very real. Throbbing need pulsed between her legs, replacing the chill of fear.
“I’m going to remove your dress.”
“Okay.” The word whooshed from her. Dizziness caused her to sway. Is this really happening? His velvet baritone held a familiar lilt she couldn’t place, but surely if she’d heard that sexy sound before, she’d remember. Right now she was so aroused, it could be her high school boyfriend and she wouldn't know—or care.
“Okay, what?”
Her body tensed at his rebuke. “Okay, Sir.”
“You have enough discipline coming this evening for past transgressions, Miss Manning. Let’s not complicate matters by increasing their number. All right?”
“All right, Sir.” She sucked in a breath at the mention of punishment. What would he do to her? She had stipulated mild discipline, but what did that mean to him?

Where do Story Ideas Come From?

I’m often asked where I get my ideas for a story.  How do I come up with the plot, characters, conflicts and setting?

Each author goes about their story writing in a different way.  I have no magic formula or secret recipe and I admit most stories come to me in a very simple, minimal fashion.

I’ve come up with stories from hearing a song, people-watching, a sentence or comment in mid conversation with a friend or co-worker, something I’ve seen or read in the news…but more often than not I come up with story ideas by just a phrase popping into my head which ends up being the title.

Yep, that simple.

From that title, which may be only 3 to 5 words long, a story develops.  Characters are formed, a setting is built and conflicts and plots are worked out.

That’s how I came up with the light-hearted romantic suspense story for my debut novel Some Like it in Handcuffs.  From there I created Sunny Kennedy and her hero Judson Blackwolf.  I agonized over their professions, gave them a background and families and filled in the plot, setting and conflicts.  Of course I changed my outline several times as I organized my thoughts and even made changes to key points in the midst of writing, but it all worked out in the end.

Incredible to think that those 5 simple words started an idea for a story then finished with a completed manuscript.  Even more incredible and crazy how one idea—one title—can snowball into a series isn’t it?  Since writing Some Like it in Handcuffs I’ve plotted out stories for each of Sunny Kennedy’s brothers and each title starts out with Some Like it…

Some Like it in Handcuffs blurb:

Sunny Kennedy, the only female in a family of blue blood male detectives, is determined to prove testosterone isn’t the only qualification required to solve a cold case. Handcuffed while undercover then taken to the precinct by an attractive detective, her domineering family demands she work with Detective Judson Blackwolf, or she’s off the case.
Judson Blackwolf thinks women in law enforcement should work behind the scenes. The prospect of working with his Captain’s sexy daughter doesn’t thrill him. He only agrees in hopes of solving the murder of his one time mentor’s daughter. Once the case is over, he’s moving to Montana to heal his wounds from the loss of his last partner.
But when their investigation takes a dangerous turn, Sunny and Jud soon realize their feelings for each other cannot be denied.

“This isn’t how I wanted it between us.”  Judson grabbed the neckline of her sweater, dragging her body to meet his with a solid thump.  Sunny licked her lips in answer to the question in his eyes.  He lowered his head to move his mouth over hers.
Sunny closed her eyes, a small whimper escaping her lips.  She didn’t want it like this either, but that wasn’t possible.  Unable to resist her attraction she accepted it wasn’t an affair, or a long distance romance she craved, but for him to love her back.  It was all or nothing for her.  Her heart sank.  She accepted this as their goodbye kiss.
With no thought to what was happening upstairs, Sunny rose up on her toes demanding more.  Her lips pulsated against Judson’s.  When his hand trembled against her cheek in a soft caress she lost touch with reality.
“Judson.” Sunny’s weakened body drifted farther into Judson’s as his fingers glided down her arms, pulling them to her sides where their fingers intertwined.  He forced them behind her before his tongue thrust into her mouth.
Their bodies molded together, she heard her own heartbeat and his as well when he curved his fingers around her rear and squeezed.
That’s when the click of the handcuffs against her wrist connected her to the handle of the locked cupboard.
“What the hell…Judson?”  She looked up at him, her knees shook, her body still inflamed with fever.

“Like I was saying, you wait here and I’ll go upstairs to check it out.  Backup’s already been called, so you’re safe until your brothers arrive.”  Judson winked before walking toward the steps to the third level.  Once he reached them he turned toward her and smiled.  “Gotcha,” he whispered with his notorious grin.
